10 Tips for Online Students: University of Florida Edition 

Learning online is pretty similar to learning in person: You listen to lectures, submit assignments and chat with classmates. But there are a few differences worth considering, especially if you’re attending classes online with the University of Florida.

1. Leverage All the Resources Available to You  

By earning your graduate certificate online at UF, you’ll gain access to numerous virtual resources, including:

  Enjoy the same library privileges as on-campus students, gaining access to relevant academic journals, magazines and news articles.

2. Find a Cozy Workspace  

When it comes to online learning, the world is your oyster. Some students prefer a cozy corner of their home, while others prefer the hustle and bustle of their local coffee shop.  

Wherever you settle in, make sure it’s conducive to your work style. Don’t forget your essentials: a pen, notebook, headphones and a steaming cup of your favorite brew within arm’s reach.  

3. Get to Know Your Virtual Workspace 

Your online setup is just as important as your offline one. UF online courses are offered through Canvas (eLearning), where you can jump into discussions, view grades, take quizzes and find all your course-related materials.  

Canvas can be accessed via desktop or phone app, but you’ll need your GatorLink username and password. We recommend downloading the Canvas app so that you always have access to your courses.  

4. Manage Your Time Wisely 

You’re probably juggling work while pursuing your graduate certificate. If you’ve got limited time on your hands, make the best of it. Map out your weeks in advance, and carve out time to study and complete assignments to avoid feeling rushed.  

5. Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute  

Most online college assignments are due Sunday night. Yes, you could leave all your work until Saturday, but that leaves little wiggle room. When mapping out your weeks, set time out of your weekdays for coursework. Your future self will thank you! 

6. Reach Out With Any Questions 

At UF, your professors will help you every step of the way and can typically be reached during their virtual office hours. Don’t hesitate to drop them a line! Your fellow students will be in the same boat as you, so reach out to them if you’re ever looking for a fresh take or an opportunity to network. 

7. Touch Grass  

Throughout our program, you’ll spend your free time studying such topics as: 

• The development of clinical trials; 
• The importance of context in conducting research; and 
• The barriers to implementation science.  

All the while, you’ll be juggling personal and professional responsibilities. We mentioned scheduling time to study, but it’s also critical to set aside time for yourself, even if it’s just a quick stroll. Self-care is key to thriving in an online learning environment. 

8. Rub Elbows With Your Fellow Gators
